Anime + Manga: Start Here

Manga outsells American comics in many markets, and anime is how millions of fans find it. If you've only watched the anime, the manga is often the full, uncut version of the story. It's often further ahead, too.

Manga 101

• Read right to left. Start at what looks like the "back" cover. Panels flow top-right to bottom-left. You'll adapt in minutes.
• Mostly black and white. Manga is serialized weekly or monthly, so artists use screentone (yes, halftone dots) instead of color.
• Volumes (tankōbon) collect around 8–10 chapters each.

It starts as a Viking revenge story and becomes something much bigger about violence and peace. Vinland Saga Book 1

Monster: the thriller

Naoki Urasawa's psychological thriller follows a surgeon who saves a boy, and that boy grows up to be a killer. Get the Perfect Edition. Monster Perfect Edition Vol. 1

Watch vs Read

Start with whichever grabs you. Many fans watch the anime, then switch to the manga when the show ends a season and they can't wait.
